«The white shirt has always been part of my life,» said Ms. Herrera, whose own seminal blouses included the crisp tops she wore with her school uniform as a child, while riding horses as a young equestrian and practicing her forehand on the tennis court.

«There are endless ways of wearing a white shirt. You can try one in the evening with jewels and a skirt, or with trousers and a wonderful belt. You can wear it with shorts, or on top of a bathing suit, and it always looks fresh and very snappy and seductive at the same time,» she said.
Unsurprisingly, Ms. Herrera is meticulous about caring for her white shirts—no easy task when you consider the stain-magnetic qualities of the notoriously short-lived piece.

«They always have to be washed by hand—otherwise, they become a bit yellowish—and they must be really perfectly ironed,» she said. «Even if it’s old, it should always look new.» But no matter how fastidious one is, accidents do happen, even to Ms. Herrera. «Someone got red wine on me—it was a big accident,» she recalled, laughing. «But, you know, white is a very boring color, so it’s good to add something red!
“I love the idea of elegance and intricacy, but whether it’s in a piece of clothing or a fragrance, the intricacy must appear as simplicity,” says Fashion Icon Carolina Herrera.
